Pets on Parade thanks to Kiwanis!

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Patriotic Marchers On Saturday May 15, the Los Altos Kiwanis Club held their 63rd annual Pet Parade down Main Street in Los Altos, California.

The Kiwanis Club International is a global organization of volunteers of every age who are dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

The Los Altos Kiwanis Club has been organizing the Pet Parade since 1948. Every year this beloved community tradition attracts thousands of people, hundreds of families, and hundreds of dogs and various other pets to participate and watch.

Marching in the parade were all kinds of dogs, some wearing costumes, while others sported dresses, t-shirts, bandanas and even pink tutus. Puppies and small dogs traveled in wagons, and some even had miniature doggie floats to make a grand show during the march.

All types of Babies attended!

Dr. Charmaine Tu and her Lab Guinness

The Los Altos Kiwanis Club members contribute many hours of community service each year and raise funds to support their efforts through donations and their yearly Christmas Tree sales.

Each year they put on the Pet Parade to bring together families and children within the community. “Seeing the families together and enjoying the event is the best part of Pet Parade,” says Dr. Charmaine Tu, a Los Altos Kiwanis Club member, organizer and MC for the Pet Parade. She is also the owner of Guinness, a chocolate lab who is the official Mascot of the Los Altos Pet Parade.

Puppies and Heroes!

Dogs, children and adults weren’t the only ones participating in the Pet Parade. There were horses, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, mice, hamsters, hermit crabs, lizards, bearded dragons, parrots, macaws, box turtles, worms, and even garden snails all marching in the parade. “Kids will bring any animal they can find just to participate,” says Dr. Tu who marveled at the boy with the snails. When asked what her favorite pet in the parade was she said “The dachshunds in the hot dog outfits! I look for them every year.”

The dogs weren't the only ones marching...

April’s Feature Dog – Shih Tzu

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Shih Tzu Brothers Cosmo & MisterMeet Cosmo and Mister, six year old Shih Tzu brothers who are two peas in a pod. Born on the same day by different mothers, Cosmo and Mister share daddy DNA, and the same neighborhood. They live next door to each other and spend every day hanging out together, snuggling at nap time, and parading together during walks. If apart too long they whine to be reunited, then adorn each other in puppy kisses once together again.

Cosmo always gets his way!Cosmo is the brother with attitude! He likes to show the ‘people’ world that he is top dog and demands lap time, attention, and being carried up and down the stairs.

He loves going on a daily 1.25 mile walk around a lake filled with ducks, where he stops to rest in every shaded spot he finds. During meal time if a piece of his dry food drops to the floor he will play soccer with it for hours before eating it. He will save his bone treats until company comes over, quickly eating it in front of them without sharing. However, this attitude has made him a hit with the ladies who follow him and give him kisses when he is out and about.

Mister is the funny one who loves to play and eat! Everyday he carries his favorite toy up to his brothers house, throwing it around and pouncing on it to the beat of his own drum. When not playing Mister loves to beg for food, his favorite treat being popcorn. He will twirl in circles for something good, a trick he also does when he needs to go outside to the bathroom, clearly a feat he expects a treat for!
Mister is a sneaky little Devil!
At home Mister has leopard print stairs up to the bed, and a Zebra print carrier that he loves to travel in. This fashion hound has a drawer full of clothes and doesn’t mind sporting the latest K9 styles! When guests spend the night Mister will sneak down his leopard stairs, climb into the guests bed, and snuggle with them to make them feel at home.

The Shih Tzu, which translates to Lion Dog in Chinese, is believed to be a cross between a Pekingese, a Lhasa Apso, and/or a Tibetan mountain dog. Perfect lap dogs, the Shih Tzu was bred to be a companion dog and was prized among Chinese royalty. During the Chinese Revolution this breed almost went extinct, and only seven females and seven males survived. Today every Shih Tzu can be traced back to one of these original 14 dogs.

A loyal and lively little dog, the Shih Tzu makes a great companion, watch dog, and is very friendly with people and other dogs. They do require patience while training, and good pack leadership to avoid a potentially bossy dog. They can be difficult to house break, Cosmo & Mister are always getting into things!and they require daily walks, and daily grooming. The Shih Tzu can gain weight easily, so overfeeding should be avoided. They are prone to eye infections, early tooth loss, and are sensitive to heat, due to their short muzzles.

Budget Friendly Howl-o-ween Costumes

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Any dog would agree that it’s just not right to let your best friend trick or treat in the nude, so make sure you wear a costume and put your dog in one too! We’ve come up with some simple doggie costume ideas that won’t bark the bank, and require no sewing, or gluing. Each of our costume ideas cost less than $5 and can even be made with items you may already have at home. Just look around your house to see what you can use to make your dog extra special this Howl-o-ween.

Mummy Dog

The Mummy Dog

Everyone needs a Mummy, especially an adorable furry one. Here’s what you’ll need to complete your Mummy Dog:
Gauze & Tea Bag
1. Multiple Rolls of Guaze
2. Black Tea Bag

You will need enough gauze to loosely cover your dog. Make a cup of strong black tea and soak half of your gauze rolls in the tea, hang to dry.

Start with the remaining white gauze, loosely wrapping the gauze around your dogs torso. Tie the ends of the gauze together and continue wrapping your dog, pull at the gauze to give it a tattered grunge look as you wrap. Finish wrapping with the tea stained gauze allowing sections of the white gauze to show through. Loosely drape an end of the gauze over your dogs forehead and tie to collar.

Do not apply gauze tightly to your dog or around limbs. Avoid wrapping gauze around your dog’s neck, instead use your dog’s collar to support the gauze up to the forehead. Voila, you have an official Mummy for Howl-o-ween!
Baby Dog

Baby Barker

Make your dog an official baby by adding old baby items to create a fun Baby Barker! Here’s what you’ll need to complete your Baby Barker:

1. Bib
2. Pacifier
3. Single Hair Bow
4. Doggie Diapers if you have them

This one is easy, simply attach bib to your dogs neck, if your dog’s neck is too large pin the bib to the collar, if your dog’s neck is too small, cut or pin the bib to fit.

Nuk & BibIf your dog already wears doggie diapers use them to make this baby look complete, don’t use real baby diapers on your dog because that’s just wrong. Pin a Pacifier to the bib, or use a ribbon to tie it to the collar, this is just a prop so monitor your dog so the pacifier doesn’t become a chew toy. Use a cute little hair clip to finish off the look and your Baby Barker is ready to be babied!

Spa Lady

Spa Lady

Every dog has it’s day at the spa! Make this Howl-o-ween full of clean family fun with a Spa Lady costume. Here’s what you’ll need to complete your Spa Lady:

1. Bath Pouf
2. Rubber Ducky
3. Foam Hair Roller
4. Old hand or sweat towel

Wrap your dog’s torso with the hand towel and roll down the top edge over the corner, pin if needed. Tie the bath pouf to the collar, do not hang over your dog’s neck. If your dog has long hair roll the foam roller on the crown of the head.
Bath Items
You could also attach a colorful shower or swim cap to your dog using elastic or ribbon to create a party hat style strap, then cut out ear holes for your dog. Supervise your dog so the cap doesn’t slip and cover your dog’s nose or become a choking hazard. Now your dog is ready to be pampered!

Safe Props

With any costume always monitor your dog and never leave your dog unattended. All props and clothing should be simple to remove and safe if your dog does manage to chew on it before you can take it away. For props use items your dog already enjoys such as squeaky toys and treats to make creative fun costumes. Try attaching a fun squeaky toy animal to your dog’s harness to transform your dog into a miniature horse. Old clothing such as football jerseys or tennis shorts can also make funny costumes that will make your dog howl. Have a happy and safe Howl-o-ween!

Poo Poo Ticket from the PoPo?

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

PooperFeeling lazy when it’s time to scoop the poop? Well, whip out the energy drinks because that lackadaisical attitude can get you one hefty fine from the Police!

Many US cities have increased their fines from $100 to $250, some as much as $1,000. New York City and Baltimore, Md. have already put the $1,000 fecal fine into action. Even first-time offenders are being hit with these fines.NYC $1000 Fine Notice

Over 40% of Americans do not pick up their dogs’ poop, and the ones that do are mostly women. Come on guys! Nothing is more irresistable to a woman than a man picking up after his pooch. It tells her you are caring, confident, responsible, dedicated, and best of all intelligent – because you know how to save $100-$1000!

Think you can avoid the poo poo PoPo? Some cities have implemented a complaint hotline, New York’s hotline received over 3,000 complaints last year! Your disgusted neighbors are spying on you and will tattle tale. There are also poo patrol agents, if they see your pup poop and you walk away, expect a ticket. They even have sting operations, don’t end up on the next episode of ‘To Catch a Pooper’. Poopoo Ticket from the PoPoSome cities issue over 1,000 fines per year, and they are kicking up their poop patrol because of so many complaints. Sounds crazy? Countries around the world use dog DNA testing to match poop with their owners. Offenders get a fine in the mail – try and get out of that ticket!

Do you feel the fines are too steep or unfair? Well think about this:

• Your dog might enjoy feasting on poop left behind. Smooched with your pooch lately?

• Stepping in poop leaves a smelly accent to your shoe that can be tracked into your car or home. Ever played find that mystery poo smell?

• Dog poop contains fecal coliform bacteria, giardia, and salmonella; which can make you sick. You’re worried about swine flu?

Scoop the Poop!

• Dogs like to roll in nasty smells, old poop is one of them. Do you kiss your dog on the head?

• Fido will even step in fecal matter by accident while looking for a place to poop. Does Fido sleep on your bed?

• Poop pollutes local ecosystems such as lakes, rivers, and beaches. Where do you vacation?

Drop the weak excuses “it’s biodegradable,” “small dog, small poop,” or “I don’t have a bag.” Dog poop is nasty, smelly, and dangerous. Clip a poop bag dispenser to your leash and do your doggie duty. Otherwise, be prepared to pay the Poopy-Piper!
