Barbara Martin, Animal Communicator

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Barbara Martin and BonnieHave you ever wondered what your dog likes? How about what your dog really dislikes, besides the obvious neighborhood cat, shots from the vet, or being dressed in a pink tutu… The time has come for you to learn everything you need to know about your dog, cat, rat, horse, guinea pig, or any other animal you may have.

Meet Professional Animal Communicator, Barbara Martin, who has been helping people communicate with their animals since 1998. Animal Communication is communicating with animals telepathically through images, thoughts, feelings, and other physical sensations such as smell and taste. Communicators can talk to domesticated animals, wild animals, and animals who have passed away, and most animals are happy to share their thoughts.

Barbara, who lives in beautiful Napa, California, doesn’t even need to travel to your home to communicate with your animal. She has helped clients all across the US and Mexico gain a better understanding of their animals’ behaviors. Barbara can communicate with any animal, anywhere, right from Bonnieher own home, all she needs is a photo of the animal, the age, name, and how long they have been with the owner. We at Dog Chatter know from personal experience that her communication sessions are spot on – but that is another story. Specializing in animals who are getting ready to cross over she assists humans in knowing “when is the right time” to let their animal go, Barbara can also help with issues such as health, behavior, and emotional issues. She helps clear up problems by simply listening to an animal and telling the owner how the animal feels or what they want. She can also explain to an animal why something has happened, where someone has gone, or what needs to be done, putting an animals mind at ease. Although Barbara is not a veterinarian, she can assist an animal with medical issues by letting the vet know where it hurts, or how the animal feels, amazingly enough she can even feel an animal’s body pain.

Barbara’s first hint that she could communicate with animals was when Nugget, her 17 year old Golden Retriever, was ready to pass away. “Nugget was holding off passing because my husband couldn’t let her go,” says Barbara of her loyal Golden. In her mind, Barbara kept thinking that Nugget was holding on because Barbara’s husband wasn’t ready to give her up, at the time Barbara did not realize that she was actually communicating with the Nugget. She spoke with her husband about letting the dog go, and a soon as he accepted that Nugget was ready to move on, Nugget passed away. This made Barbara realize that what had happened was something more than her intuition, Barbara, Bonnie and friends!so she went in search of a book about communicating with animals and found “Kinship With All Life” by Allen J. Boone.

Many people would assume that Animal Communicators were born that way, and that like Dr. Dolittle, communicating with animals was just a knack. However, as a child Barbara never noticed anything special when it came to animals. She was a shy kid and regularly played with and confided in her animals. She had guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, and a rescued mixed breed dog named Toby, but none of them ‘spoke’ to her. It wasn’t until Nugget and “Kinship With All Life” that she honed in on her animal communication skills. By attending workshops and working with other communicators, she grew her skill for animal communication and eventually left her corporate job to communicate with animals full time.

Bonnie
When Barbara communicates with animals she receives pictures, words, emotions, and body feelings. “Telepathy works in a way that my mind translates into English.” says Barbara. “If I spoke another language it would translate into that language. How that works is something I cannot explain.” However, she explains that when you send pictures from your mind to your animal, they translate it into something they can understand, and vice versa. The animal is not actually speaking in English, but the pictures, words, and emotions translate that way. Barbara can help an animal understand things like why a new pet has been brought into the home, what angers the owners, why someone has gone away, and what events are about to happen. She can help owners learn things like what their pet wants to eat, why their pet is sad or upset, and why the pet behaves a certain way.

At home Barbara spends quality time with her two rescued guinea pigs named Eric Clapton and ZZ Top, and her beloved 11 year old Yellow Labrador, Bonnie. “When Bonnie was one year old we gave her a four foot long rawhide bone, she tried for over 20 minutes to get it inside her igloo” laughs Barbara while recalling her dog’s funniest moments. When Bonnie I think I can! I think I can!was younger she loved pheasant hunting, swimming, and going to the beach. Today her favorite activities include walking off leash, and going to Starbucks to hang out with people. “She is a bit defiant,” says Barbara, “when I tell her not to go near a horse, she will go right under the horse!” Bonnie eats a raw diet of organic grass fed hamburger meat, slightly cooked carrots and other mixed veggies, and plain yogurt. Her home made diet has helped her to live longer and healthier, as she has suffered from health issues in the past. She sleeps on the bed with Barbara and every morning the 80 lbs. lab rolls over, throwing her legs in the air for a good belly rub.

“Bonnie is a mirror of me,” says Barbara of her beloved lab who doesn’t like the unknown. “She won’t go through a door unless it’s fully open.” Barbara says that like Bonnie, spiritually she doesn’t like risk taking. “Other animal communicators say that Bonnie is here to teach me to love myself, and to do something no matter what the obstacle,” Fighting fears with teamwork!says Barbara of her dog that has her own fears. “Bonnie doesn’t like car rides but she gets in anyway, if she can do something she is afraid of then so can I.” Besides being Barbara’s motivation, Bonnie is also her time keeper. When Barbara’s animal communication sessions go over the scheduled 45 minutes, Bonnie will groan twice to let Barbara know, keeping her on track.

Barbara does admit that once every quarter she will ‘bomb’ and not connect with an animal. “If a person is skeptical the animals will not give me any information,” says Barbara. “The animals are so loyal they don’t want to prove their owners wrong.” Sometimes animals will even tell Barbara not to weird the people out buy forcing a conversation with them. Barbara also knows that she could ‘bomb’ a communication session if she doesn’t take care of herself. In order for her to connect she must take care of her physical and spiritual well being, by meditating and going on long nature walks. This has made Barbara more spiritual, “I spend more time connecting with myself,” says Barbara who is happier now that she works with animals. She has more respect for the planet and the creatures that inhabit it. “I used to be very opinionated,” says Barbara “now not so much because I can only assist people with their animals by having no opinion.”

We at Dog Chatter are proud to announce that Barbara Martin will be a monthly contributor on our site. Please check back to read exciting stories and tips from Barbara and her animal communications later this month and in the future. The Orangutan and the Hound

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Here is an adorable video about an Orangutan named Suryia and a Bluetick Coonhound named Roscoe. They both live in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS). They met one day while Suryia was riding an elephant to a lake to take a dip. It was love at first sight and have been best friends ever since!

Patrick’s original goal was to walk with assistance of a walker at his high school graduation, amazingly he achieved his goal years before graduation, encouraged and inspired by Ricochet’s surfing fundraiser.

Ricochet’s inspirational journey from puppy to fundraising for Patrick can be seen in this amazing video that has gone viral. With millions of views, the video has touched people all over the world and has generated over $8,570 (and counting) in donations from all over the world including Canada, The UK, Taiwan, Japan, The Netherlands, and New Zealand. Ricochet from Fun Surfer to Fundraiser!

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Ricochet Surfing. Photo by Diane EdomondsOn Thursday, February 18, at LeDeux Hotel in Hollywood, California, a two-year old Golden Retriever named Ricochet accepted the Dogswell “Wag” award for “Most Charitable,” a title that is only partially fitting. However, the words “Most Charitable, Inspirational, Amazing, Determined, Touching, Accomplished, Tear Jerking, and Heartwarming” might not have all fit on the award plaque.

In the few short years that Ricochet has been on this earth, she has already accomplished more than most people, such as raising over $10,000 for a quadriplegic surfer, raising over $20,000 for charitable causes, and inspired millions of people with her touching YouTube video.

The amazing story of Ricochet, the Surfin’ for Paws-abilities SURFice dog, begins with her birth at the Puppy Prodigies Neo-natal and Early Learning Program, founded by Judy Fridono and located in San Diego, California.

Puppy Prodigies is an innovative program that specializes in the early learning and development of new born puppies. The goal of the program is to positively affect behavioral tendencies of dogs, thus reducing the number of dogs relinquished to animal shelters for behavioral issues, and identifying puppies that had potential to work as service dogs.

In January 2008, a predominantly male litter was born into the program, and as the last puppy was arriving Judy said, “Please let the next one be a girl with a white patch on her chest.” Like a miracle, Ricochet just a new pup...Ricochet came into the world white patch and all. The tiny pup was quickly name Ricochet because she bounced all around, a fitting name since she still bounces around the world touching people’s hearts.

Ricochet was a brilliant puppy, quickly learning and excelling at the service dog training program. Suddenly, at 14 weeks of age, she lost interest in training and Judy found it very difficult to motivate her to continue her service training. To amplify the problem, at nine months old she developed a chase drive. After many months of trying to break her Ricochet learning how to surf.from chasing birds while working, Judy made the tough decision to release her from the program. “Can you imagine a service dog running after a bird while on the job? In good conscience I couldn’t breed Ricochet knowing her puppies could have the chase drive. It wouldn’t be beneficial to the people that need them,” said Judy who decided to keep Ricochet as a pet.

Bird chasing aside, Ricochet was still a smart and talented dog. Instead of being disappointed about what Ricochet couldn’t do, Judy decided to focus on what she could do, like surf – and that’s when the flood gates opened!

After many fun surfing events and competitions Ricochet was ready to began her fundraising career. In August of 2009 she surfed with the hope of sending a 15 year old quadriplegic surfer, named Patrick Ivison, to the Project Walk® Spinal CordRicochet and Patrick surfing. Photo by Diane Edmonds. Injury Recovery Center for physical therapy.

The moment she went into the water with Patrick, it was as if she finally discovered what she was born to do! Before, surfing was just a game, she would surf for a while, get off, run on the beach, then look for birds. Things changed while surfing with Patrick, she would run back to him again and again, she even jumped off her board and onto Patrick’s. They surfed together from that point on. If Patrick fell off his board she would swim by his side until he received assistance from people near him, it was a bond like no other.

Ricochet raised over $10,000 for Patrick, and her sponsor, the Rose Foundation, awarded a grant to cover three years of his physical therapy at Project Walk®. Patrick’s original goal was to walk with assistance of a walker at his high school graduation, amazingly he achieved his goal years before graduation, encouraged and inspired by Ricochet’s surfing fundraiser. Now nothing holds him back from setting even further goals!

Ricochet’s inspirational journey from puppy to fundraising for Patrick can be seen in a video that has gone viral. With millions of views, the video has touched people all over the world and has generated over $8,570 (and counting) in donations from all over the world including Canada, The UK, Taiwan, Japan, The Netherlands, and New Zealand. The video is so touching it has a “kleenex alert” warning that should be heeded! Watch the “From service dog to SURFice dog” video below, or watch it on YouTube here.

Ricochet Shopping for Surfin' Santa Paws. Photo by Barb McGown.Ricochet’s fundraiser profits go to a variety of charitable causes, such as Ricochet’s Surfin’ Santa Paws toy drive which helped purchase toys for over 638 children in hospitals, and domestic violence shelters. She assists six year old Ian McFarland, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a horrific car accident that claimed the lives of his parents. She is even giving her Dogswell “Wag” Award prize, a year’s supply of Dogswell dog food, to the AniMeals program that offers free pet food for the dogs and cats of elderly or disabled people throughout San Diego County. The AniMeals program is run by the Helen Woodward Animal Center, a non profit organization dedicated to saving the lives of animals and enriching the lives of people.

Ricochet in Hollywood!Away from her ‘cool surfer dog’ persona, Ricochet is very submissive and gentle. “She can get excitable, but she is very low key,” says Judy who must watch Ricochet around other dogs that may pick on her. Her favorite activities include running as fast as she can, lure coursing, digging for gophers, eating, surfing, and naturally, bird chasing! Ricochet plays hard, works hard, and sleeps hard, going to bed on her own at seven in the evening and rising every morning at eight. “In a sense she is very spiritual, there is some other energy at work and it is exhausting for her,” says Judy of her extremely loving and affectionate dog.

Rina and Ricochet. Photo by Barb McGown.Ricochet’s best dog friend is a Golden Retriever Lab Mix, named Rina. “They are very different, but they get along very well, Rina is a wonderful teacher for her,” says Judy of seven year old Rina, who is also a trained service dog.

Originally, Judy’s goal was to have Ricochet touch the life of one person as a service dog, yet Ricochet decided to go on another path, and today she has touched the lives of millions! “I believe Ricochet is on a mission and I’m here to help facilitate that,” says Judy of her amazing dog, “I’m the driver and she’s the navigator. She has taughtJudy and Ricochet. Photo by Diane Edmonds me acceptance, and to focus on the positive rather than the negative. Look at the things she has accomplished, they have been so big.”

A Valentine for Ziggy

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Steve Valentine and ZiggyOnce upon a time in a land called L.A., there was a homeless, timid, young Chihuahua mix named Snowflake. Abandoned simply because his family didn’t care enough to pay $200 for an operation, Snowflake ended up at the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, an organization dedicated to the rescue of abused and abandoned animals in the Los Angeles area.

Unbeknownst to Snowflake, this was a blessing in disguise, as he had obvious signs of abuse, was malnourished, and would cower when anyone moved. Linda Blair knew this sweet little dog needed a special home so she contacted celebrity pet photographer, Christopher Ameruoso, to see if he could help place this lovable little dog. Christopher immediately thought of his good friend and award-winning actor, Steve Valentine, with whom he was involved in various animal rights movements and organizations.
Ziggy
Steve Valentine is best known for his role as Nigel Townsend on the hit NBC crime drama, Crossing Jordan. He has guest starred on shows such as House M.D., Monk, and Will & Grace. Steve has also been seen in films such as Spider Man 3 and Mars Attacks!

Steve didn’t stand a chance once the big, hazel eyes of the snowy white dog gazed up at him. It was love at first sight and he took Snowflake home the same day, but not before changing Snowflake’s name to Ziggy! The name Ziggy was adventurous and confident, very fitting for the life this little dog was about to receive.

Ziggy hanging out in the Wardrobe DepartmentSteve is currently working on the new Disney XD show ‘I’m in the Band,’ where he has the luxury of having Ziggy accompany him on the production lot. “It’s great to work on one of the only lots in Hollywood that allows pets,” says Steve of the amazing pet friendly studio that even has a secure grass run where the dogs can stretch their legs.

No one is ashamed to admit that Ziggy runs the set of ‘I’m in the Band.’ Before filming, both Steve and Ziggy get dressed up over in wardrobe, where Ziggy gets fitted in the most stylish rock star tees and accessories. However, there is a wanted poster for him in wardrobe because he chewed up a sweater, but everyone just laughs it off while giving him affection in lieu of punishment.

Ziggy wanted for destroying a sweaterSteve’s dressing room has been claimed by Ziggy, which is filled with his favorite toys and torn socks, but when locked inside he barks to be released. “He is surrounded by girls all day, and people argue about where he should be. Everyone in the crew and the offices want to play with him and hang out,” says Steve of the highly adored dog.

Ziggy has not yet made an appearance on the show but Steve is working on it, “They did film him for one episode, but it got cut. We hope he will get on the show at some point!” says Steve of his little Rock Star.

Ziggy’s favorite activities include chasing laser beams, teasing or greeting the neighborhood dogs, and chasing coyotes. His special talent is singing on cue, a skill he learned while mimicking Steve during vocal warmups on the way to work. Ziggy loves bone marrow treats, sleeping on the bed while tucked into Steve’s left armpit, and hanging out with Steve’s amazing fiancé Inna Korobkina.

Nap time for Ziggy
Before Ziggy, Steve would laugh about people who had photo albums filled with their dog photos. Now he has over 80 photos of Ziggy on his iPhone that he loves to show off. “It’s nice to wake up in the morning and see Ziggy, he makes me laugh,” says Steve of his Chihuahua Jack Russell Terrier Mix he calls a ‘Chi-zle.’Ziggy with his Valentine

Ziggy’s life went from a dismal and lonely existence to an amazing fantasy that people can only dream about. He walks the doggie red carpet, while hobnobbing with all sorts of celebrities and stars. “I never thought I would ever have a pet, and now I’m definitely a dog person. I’m complete now,” says Steve. After meeting Ziggy we know that the feeling is mutual, Ziggy is also complete. He has received the best Valentine any dog could ask for, a human named Steve.

Everything under one woof and hoof!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Birds of a feather flock together, but how about a pig, dogs, miniature horses, and many other animals flocking together?

Everything under one woof and hoof!

Located in Winchester, California, the Animals First Pet Resort is home to many wonderful animals that provide education, entertainment, and companionship to people and animals alike. The resort’s slogan is ‘Everything under one woof and hoof!’

Three Miniature Horses Animals Firstare the first to greet visitors to Animals First property, followed by a large bristly black pig named Hammy Hamlet. There are four horses, two cats, a few moles, and of course, dogs. The pet resort is filled with the sounds of birds chirping, cats meowing, horses neighing, and wind rustling through the dry desert. However, with dogs being the number one inhabitants of the property, they are the most quiet residents, content basking in the sun and frolicking in the doggie playground.

Days are filled with joyful laughter as people observe the animals doing funny activities and tricks. Dolly, a seven year Palomino Horse, sticks out her tongue for horse licorice, while Cally Ally the Cavalier King Charles burrows for moles, and pig Hammy Hamlet sits on command, smiling for banana peels.

Passion and Hammy Hamlet doing the 'sit' command.

Animals First is owned by Marc and Sandie Taylor who live and work on the two and half acre property. When they purchased the property nine years ago, the house had been condemned. The barn, once home to goats and sheep, had floors so caked with feces that the concrete floors were invisible. Sandie and Marc completely remodeled the property, planting trees, reclaiming the barn, and transforming it into an animal oasis.

Marc, Sandie, Passion, and the Miniature Horses. The Animals First offers dog and cat boarding, doggie day care, professional grooming, and training. There is even a Dog-ccessories Pet Store to purchase unique pet supplies. The facility boasts luxury theme pet suites such as the Hawaiian Getaway Dog Suite, a doggie playground, designer cat suites, and a spacious nine-stall show barn for horses.

Sandie, originally from England, always dreamed of working with animals. “As a child, if I heard a horse clip-clopping on the road, I just had to go outside to see it,” says Sandie. “I love bringing everything under one woof!” Sandie began her animal career working for Canine Companions for Independence, training Service Dogs.

Marc grooming a dog headed home.Marc, born in Ohio, is an ordained pastor who almost became a Missionary before starting the Animals First business with Sandie. Married for 14 years, Sandie and Marc feel complete working full time with animals. They rescue Cavalier King Charles dogs, and even foster children in need of a loving home. In the event of fire emergencies they open their facility to animal control and rescues. During the last San Diego fire they took in 76 dogs, cats, and horses. “The horses were evacuated and horse trailers came in convoys that were lined up down the street,” says Sandie who even housed a family with five horses, three dogs, and two adults.

Hippo and a Mastiff Great Dane MixWith all of the amazing and charitable things they do, Sandie and Marc continue to do God’s work through the animals. By attending special events, charities, and doing therapy work with sick and elderly people, Marc and Sandie can bring the joy and love they receive from the animals to others. Their beloved Golden Retrievers, Passion and Faithful, are always ready for some therapy treatment, along with pig Hammy Hamlet and a miniature pony named Hippo. Hippo, who is the size of a large dog, is welcome in Retirement homes. “He’s not housebroken but he’s never had an accident yet,” says Sandie of Hippo who also accompanies Police Horses at events.

Animals First is the perfect place to take a pet, Sandie and Marc are always at their ‘bark and call’ and take special measures to ensure the safety and well being of the animals. People come from all over the country to board their pets with them. One client flew their Maltese from Florida to California so Hippo with the Horse Po Po!they could have piece of mind during their three week Australian vacation. Another time, a Bichon Frisé and a Newfoundland stayed at Animals First for 10 months while the owners transferred jobs to New York.

At Animals First the animals get regular exercise, feeding, entertainment, and companionship leaving them happy and content. Even the neighbor’s dog comes over everyday to hang out and observe, it seems he likes it better than his own yard!
