Patriotic Marchers On Saturday May 15, the Los Altos Kiwanis Club held their 63rd annual Pet Parade down Main Street in Los Altos, California.

The Kiwanis Club International is a global organization of volunteers of every age who are dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

Marching in the parade were all kinds of dogs, some wearing costumes, while others sported dresses, t-shirts, bandanas and even pink tutus. Puppies and small dogs traveled in wagons, and some even had miniature doggie floats to make a grand show during the march.

All types of Babies attended!

Dr. Charmaine Tu and her Lab Guinness

The Los Altos Kiwanis Club members contribute many hours of community service each year and raise funds to support their efforts through donations and their yearly Christmas Tree sales.

Each year they put on the Pet Parade to bring together families and children within the community. “Seeing the families together and enjoying the event is the best part of Pet Parade,” says Dr. Charmaine Tu, a Los Altos Kiwanis Club member, organizer and MC for the Pet Parade. She is also the owner of Guinness, a chocolate lab who is the official Mascot of the Los Altos Pet Parade.

Puppies and Heroes!

Dogs, children and adults weren’t the only ones participating in the Pet Parade. There were horses, goats, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, mice, hamsters, hermit crabs, lizards, bearded dragons, parrots, macaws, box turtles, worms, and even garden snails all marching in the parade. “Kids will bring any animal they can find just to participate,” says Dr. Tu who marveled at the boy with the snails. When asked what her favorite pet in the parade was she said “The dachshunds in the hot dog outfits! I look for them every year.”

The dogs weren't the only ones marching...

May’s Feature Dog – Chihuahua

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Cream is a Chihuahua who loves fashion!Meet Cream, a two year old, four pound Chihuahua who loves to wear pink. Cream is an independent girl who likes to explore and make new friends. She enjoys long naps, short walks, and any clothes that make her ears look big.

Her favorite activities include hanging out with her friends, investigating the neighborhood, and running up to strangers just to say “Hello!” Cream enjoys rolling in anything smelly that she may encounter during her walks, and she doesn’t mind sharing her discoveries with friends.

The Chihuahua is the smallest breed in the world, and was named after the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where the breed was first discovered. There are many theories of the true origin of this little dog. Some believe they came over from Europe, originating in Malta, while others believe they came from China. Wherever their origins, the Chihuahua was considered holy to Pre-Columbian Indian nations, and is still popular today!

How to spell Chihuahua. This protective breed is very territorial, proud, loyal, and adventurous. They love attention, but can become saucy and yappy if over coddled by their owners. Chihuahuas can be very ‘breedist’, preferring to stick with their own, while not getting along well non-Chihuahua dogs. They are intelligent, lively and strong willed, so exercise and plenty of training is recommended for this breed.

Many Chihuahuas don’t like children and can become unpredictable and suspicious, causing them to snap. This behavior is mostly caused by their owners who tend to spoil and coddle them because they are so tiny and cute. Families who are considering a Chihuahua should take care to establish a pack leader, while following a regular training and exercise routine for the dog.

Chihuahuas come in smooth or long coat variations, and weigh between three to six pounds. They can suffer from health issues such as hypoglycemia, colds, glaucoma, and easy weight gain. They are sensitive to cold, so clothing is recommended in cold environments. This amazing little dog can be difficult to train, but fun to dress up, and make excellent companions. For more information on the Chihuahua or to adopt please visit the Chihuahua Rescue & Transport Inc. at chihuahua-rescue.com.

A Valentine for Ziggy

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Steve Valentine and ZiggyOnce upon a time in a land called L.A., there was a homeless, timid, young Chihuahua mix named Snowflake. Abandoned simply because his family didn’t care enough to pay $200 for an operation, Snowflake ended up at the Linda Blair WorldHeart Foundation, an organization dedicated to the rescue of abused and abandoned animals in the Los Angeles area.

Unbeknownst to Snowflake, this was a blessing in disguise, as he had obvious signs of abuse, was malnourished, and would cower when anyone moved. Linda Blair knew this sweet little dog needed a special home so she contacted celebrity pet photographer, Christopher Ameruoso, to see if he could help place this lovable little dog. Christopher immediately thought of his good friend and award-winning actor, Steve Valentine, with whom he was involved in various animal rights movements and organizations.
Ziggy
Steve Valentine is best known for his role as Nigel Townsend on the hit NBC crime drama, Crossing Jordan. He has guest starred on shows such as House M.D., Monk, and Will & Grace. Steve has also been seen in films such as Spider Man 3 and Mars Attacks!

Steve didn’t stand a chance once the big, hazel eyes of the snowy white dog gazed up at him. It was love at first sight and he took Snowflake home the same day, but not before changing Snowflake’s name to Ziggy! The name Ziggy was adventurous and confident, very fitting for the life this little dog was about to receive.

Ziggy hanging out in the Wardrobe DepartmentSteve is currently working on the new Disney XD show ‘I’m in the Band,’ where he has the luxury of having Ziggy accompany him on the production lot. “It’s great to work on one of the only lots in Hollywood that allows pets,” says Steve of the amazing pet friendly studio that even has a secure grass run where the dogs can stretch their legs.

No one is ashamed to admit that Ziggy runs the set of ‘I’m in the Band.’ Before filming, both Steve and Ziggy get dressed up over in wardrobe, where Ziggy gets fitted in the most stylish rock star tees and accessories. However, there is a wanted poster for him in wardrobe because he chewed up a sweater, but everyone just laughs it off while giving him affection in lieu of punishment.

Ziggy wanted for destroying a sweaterSteve’s dressing room has been claimed by Ziggy, which is filled with his favorite toys and torn socks, but when locked inside he barks to be released. “He is surrounded by girls all day, and people argue about where he should be. Everyone in the crew and the offices want to play with him and hang out,” says Steve of the highly adored dog.

Ziggy has not yet made an appearance on the show but Steve is working on it, “They did film him for one episode, but it got cut. We hope he will get on the show at some point!” says Steve of his little Rock Star.

Ziggy’s favorite activities include chasing laser beams, teasing or greeting the neighborhood dogs, and chasing coyotes. His special talent is singing on cue, a skill he learned while mimicking Steve during vocal warmups on the way to work. Ziggy loves bone marrow treats, sleeping on the bed while tucked into Steve’s left armpit, and hanging out with Steve’s amazing fiancé Inna Korobkina.

Nap time for Ziggy
Before Ziggy, Steve would laugh about people who had photo albums filled with their dog photos. Now he has over 80 photos of Ziggy on his iPhone that he loves to show off. “It’s nice to wake up in the morning and see Ziggy, he makes me laugh,” says Steve of his Chihuahua Jack Russell Terrier Mix he calls a ‘Chi-zle.’Ziggy with his Valentine

Ziggy’s life went from a dismal and lonely existence to an amazing fantasy that people can only dream about. He walks the doggie red carpet, while hobnobbing with all sorts of celebrities and stars. “I never thought I would ever have a pet, and now I’m definitely a dog person. I’m complete now,” says Steve. After meeting Ziggy we know that the feeling is mutual, Ziggy is also complete. He has received the best Valentine any dog could ask for, a human named Steve.

Chi WOW WOW to the rescue!

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Left to Right Django, Izzy and ElvisIt’s a bird, it’s a plane, no – it’s Super Chi WOW WOW flying off shelves in pet boutiques across the globe. If you haven’t heard of the Chi WOW WOW brand then it’s time to catch up with the hottest trend in Doggie Fashion.

The original designer of Vintage Streetwear for the Metrosexual Canine, Chi WOW WOW manufactures chic hoodies, tees, jackets, and sling over carriers made of vintage and recycled t-shirts. Not to mention cool accessories such as doggie backpacks and street bling jewelry. There is even a line of clothing made for hip girl dogs called IZZY GALORE, and an exclusive line of doggie duds featuring the fantastic Marvel Comic characters.Elvis's First Captain America Tee

Chi WOW WOW inspiration and chairdog, Elvis Paxton, was the first to adorn the awesome that is Chi WOW WOW, when his owner Carolyn Paxton made him a tee from a vintage Captain America T-shirt she cherished as a child. Elvis received so much attention from the funky tee that Carolyn decided to start her own line of vintage inspired dog clothing. Assisted by his Sales and Marketing team, Izzy Galore and Django, these three Chihuahuas have made a name for themselves in the Chi world.

Elvis was eight years old when adopted by Carolyn. “It was love at first sight,” says Carolyn of the adorable white faced Chi who was sick and needed special attention. “I took Elvis everywhere with me, he was so calm and lovable, it was just me and him.” Although Elvis’s origins are unknown, Carolyn imagines he came from the barrio and knows his way around the streets. During walks he is very alpha and can work a room of people or dogs winning everyone over. He enjoys ice cream, is crazy for tortillas, and loves to drink algae water from a planter. “He looks at me like ‘You should try it, it’s great!’” says Carolyn who has yet to sample the tasty runoff.

Django, Elvis, Izzy and Carolyn

Sadly, in June a brain tumor caused Elvis to go blind and suffer from seizures. Now walks are via stroller, where Elvis leans way out over the edge and rolls out if he hears a dog. “I have to strap him in because he does head flips out and lands on his feet,” says Carolyn “he doesn’t see anything wrong with it!” Elvis’s daredevil moves have made Carolyn an expert at doing wheelies to make him sit back. “He wants everyone to know he is the king, even though he is blind.”

The Original Izzy Galore Bellbottom BodysuitThe second addition to the Chi WOW WOW family was Izzy. Rescued as a young Chi, Carolyn had hoped Izzy would be the perfect model for a Chi WOW WOW girl’s line she named IZZY GALORE. However, Izzy was a total tomboy, “She doesn’t belong in dresses, she looks silly!” says Carolyn who first designed a mod bellbottomed bodysuit for Izzy that sold like crazy in Japan. Today Izzy only sports hoodies or tanks if it’s cold, and she absolutely hates it. “She would much rather that I owned and operated a chicken farm,” says Carolyn of her fashion resistant Chi. Izzy loves all toys and will play with them like mad, her favorite being a giant stuffed octopus. She is very gracious with company and will slip into the guest room for early morning greetings and snuggles before breakfast.

Django, a one year old Chi, is the most recent addition to the household, and also a shelter rescue. The perfect little fit model, Django is still getting used to wearing clothing, unlike Elvis who loves it. In love with the concept of eating but not the action, Django is like a skeleton and will only eat dog cookies. Django approving the Recycled T-Shirts“I’m trying to put weight on him, but he fools around with the food, then Izzy moves in and eats all his food,” says Carolyn of her skinny Chi, “Django is getting skinnier while Izzy is getting fatter!”

All three Chi’s sleep with Carolyn in a king sized bed. Sometimes Carolyn finds herself in the most cramped and awkward position, with Elvis under her armpit and Izzy and Django under the covers. Carolyn doesn’t mind a bit and dotes on her beloved Chi’s in a manner that is captivating. The love for her Chihuahuas shines through her clothing line which she enjoys designing with such attention to detail.

Chi WOW WOW is in almost every major city in the world with the biggest markets in Japan and the USA. It has a huge following in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Dubai, and Russia. The Vintage line is the most popular with the reversible Hoodies, made from recycled t-shirts, and the Sling Over Carriers, made from recycled jeans, being the best selling items. Each item is one of a kind and die hard fans purchase handfuls of hoodies and multiple carriers at a time.

Young ElvisWith all of the success Chi WOW WOW has received since its launch in 2004, giving back has been a major factor for Carolyn, who started the Elvis Fund. “The Elvis fund has so much meaning because I don’t know how much longer Elvis is going to be around,” says Carolyn who gives a large portion of her profits to the Elvis Fund managed by the Pasadena Community Foundation. Every year Carolyn awards grants to organizations that educate the public on animal responsibility: “We have a lot of problems with homeless animals, it gets back to educating the public on spaying neutering and adopting versus purchasing.”

Cheeko B Good

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Kattya, Cheeko and FrankieSan Francisco is renowned for its culture, dining, architecture, cable cars, and now – Cheeko B Pet Boutique. Located near Union Square this boutique has been called the Crème de la Crème of doggie stores.

Opened in March 2008 by Kattya and Patrick Breitenbach, Cheeko B features designer clothing, collars, toys, treats, and other unique items. Kattya loved shopping for her dogs but couldn’t find many places with unique doggie items, so she used her experience in developing San Francisco and Napa Valley Spas to open Cheeko B. The hardest part in the seven-month development was finding a location, “People didn’t understand what a Pet Boutique was, they thought we wanted to board dogs,” says Kattya, “we finally found a landlord who had a dog and understood the concept” – thus Cheeko B came to fruition.
Cheeko with his toy
Cheeko B has two canine representatives, Cheeko and Frankie. Cheeko is a five year old Chihuahua Jack Russel mix, and the boutique K9 owner. Frankie, a two year old Chihuahua, is the customer service representative. Cheeko and Frankie were named in memory of Kattya’s father Francisco, whose nicknames were Chico and Frank. “Cheeko and Frankie love working in the boutique,” says Kattya “but they are constantly sleeping on the job!”

Cheeko and Frankie are living it up at the Cheeko B Pet Boutique. They have an unlimited assortment of treats and kibble to sample, every kind of designer outfit and accessory to sport, and all the newest toys to play with. Cheeko even has a body double! Doggie mannequins made by BADSF Inc. in Cheeko’s image are displayed all over the store. “Sometimes we catch Cheeko sniffing the mannequin as if it were a real dog,” says Kattya of her curious co-worker.

Cheeko B Pet Boutique
When shopping for the Boutique, Kattya looks for unique local San Francisco products. Some of these items include doggie T-shirts made from recycled children’s tees, doggie duvet covers you fill with your old clothes, and a delicious assortment of baked doggie treats and cakes. Frankie even has his own line of designer Frankie B Ties made locally out of vintage and recycled ties.
Cheeko B Pet Boutique
Toys and treats are Cheeko B’s bestsellers, the number one item being Rippys™ Tear-Apart Dog Toy because the dog feels like the toy is being torn apart, a favorite task for most dogs. The toy makes animal sounds and the Velcro detachable limbs make a ripping sound when they are torn off. Cheeko loves his Rippys™ and other designer toys, he even has a few laying around the store. “Customers always clean up his toys and I have to laugh and tell them those are Cheeko’s toys!” says Kattya.

The beautiful shop is very organized and elegant. All the leashes, collars and clothing are neatly hung for easy perusal. They even have a wall display of doggie wigs! Cheeko and Frankie are happy to model the wigs for customers, especially since they know a delicious treat is part of the modeling contract. The original front door was replaced with Dutch doors to keep the dogs safe. The dogs can see out, air flow can come in, and it Cheeko modeling a wigprevents people from allowing unleashed doggies to escape into the busy San Francisco streets. Cheeko loves to look out the window and greet visitors, barking a greeting at their arrival he confidently shows customers around the shop.

After a hard day’s work Cheeko and Frankie relax with Patrick, “After working all day with me, they only want to spend time with Patrick,” says Kattya, “What am I, chopped liver?” The boys also enjoy playing with other dogs at the Crissy Field dog beach, and Frankie spends quality time teaching Cheeko how to howl. Frankie howls like a bird and can sing the blues, if allowed to compete he would outshine everyone on American Idol!

The Cheeko B Pet Boutique has enriched the lives of Kattya and Patrick by introducing them to so many incredible people. “It’s nice to have that sense of community with other small business owners, everyone bonds together, you can collaborate on different problems and ideas,” says Kattya. Thankfully Cheeko and Frankie agree, they are two happy and hardFrankie in his tie working dogs who help make San Francisco an even more wonderful place to visit and live. When walking through the city, Cheeko and Frankie enjoy promoting their store products. People go crazy when they see Cheeko and Frankie in their Frankie B Ties, it’s simply great advertising!

Don’t hate me because I’m a Mannequin

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Boston Terrier MannequinBrooke Shields said “People think of me as a mannequin, all show and no substance.” Like Brooke, the creators of BADSF Inc. felt people couldn’t see the essence of dog mannequins, so they created the world’s first designer Dog Mannequins that are all show and substance.

Four years ago Ron Rodrigues and Nika Wynnyk formed the San Francisco based BADSF Inc. with the idea that dog mannequins should be of high quality and as amazing as the products they feature. Their custom made Dog Mannequins come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and textures for the pet boutique to the canine enthusiast.

In the 1950’s, Ron’s parents started a Display Mannequin company making children mannequins. Today they still make children mannequins which can be seen in stores such BADSF Mannequinsas Gap Kids, Baby Gap, and Gymboree. His parents began developing dog mannequins in the early 80’s as a decorative accent for department stores. Back then the department store mannequins wore stylish gowns and were posed walking their doggie mannequins in Saks Fifth Avenue.

Growing up in the Display Mannequin Industry, Ron fully understood the need for proper visual merchandising. During the 2005 pet fashion boutique explosion Ron looked closely at the available dog mannequins and noticed how cheap and ugly the plastic dogs were. “They didn’t even look like a dog, and were not breed specific” says Ron, who already had six or seven dogs in his mannequin lineup. “Dog clothing folded up doesn’t look like much, and you can’t hold it up to your dog because they don’t sit still” says Nika, who understands how easily beautiful Dog Mannequins can help sell doggie products. “Many times people walk into a store and don’t see the dog products, but with Dog Mannequins on display they suddenly realize they are in the dog department.” Very often people visit pet boutiques without their dogs, the mannequins provide them with an opportunity to see how the clothing really fits and the subtle details in the clothing design.

Ron and Nika with the Velveteen Great DaneBADSF Inc. quality Dog Mannequins include life sized Doberman Pinchers, German Shepherds, Greyhounds, Afghan Hounds, Whippets, French Bull Dogs, Scottish Terriers, Lhasa Apsos, Dachshunds, and Chihuahuas. They even have a giant Great Dane, which confounded the worlds tallest living dog, “Gibson was so skeptical of the dog mannequin because he couldn’t believe another dog was so big” says Nika of their Dog Mannequin who greeted Gibson at a trade show. BADSF Inc. is working on a Mixed breed collection of rescue dogs. Part of the proceeds from each mannequin sale goes to dog rescues such as Rocket Dog Rescue.

The Dog Mannequins are made of the finest durable fabrics, such as poly cotton twill, soft velveteen, leather, and shaggy hair like polyester. Eco-friendly and safe the Dog Mannequins are made of an aluminum frame with recycled polyester fiber fill stuffing. The smaller Dog MannequinsStuffing a Dog Mannequin are flexible and can be positioned to sit, beg, shake, look up or do most fun doggie moves. They can even be posed to play tug of war. The larger Dog Mannequins have limited flexibility but the head, tail, and ears can be positioned to give them a little doggie attitude!

These designer Dog Mannequins are not just for fancy pet boutiques! Pet product manufactures use them to show their goods at trade shows, and pet fashion designers use them as fit forms rather than having a real dog squirming around. Dachshund RaffleSome people use them as decorations in their homes, and as figures to store their favorite dog clothing and jewelry. BADSF Inc. even offers pet memorial urns, supported by the SF SPCA and the Westminster Kennel Club. One can simply store the ashes of a beloved pet inside, then decorate the Dog Mannequin urn with their dogs favorite collar or sweater.

BADSF Inc. dogs are even action heroes! They make Dog Mannequin rescue dogs for military and police training, so live dogs don’t have to be used during K9 practice rescues which could lead to injury. The Dog Mannequins are weighted and true to life, and are used for demonstrations such as parachute jumps and crashing through windows. The famous dog equipment company Combat K-9, even use BADSF Dog Mannequins to display their productsChihuahua Mannequin at military trade shows.

BADSF Inc. Dog Mannequins are a fun and wonderful way to show products or liven up your home. They are so beautiful, feel lifelike, and naturally Dog Chatter’s favorite part is: they are made in the good Old USA! For your next K9 companion consider a BADSF Dog Mannequin, because one thing is certain – their dogs are well behaved!
