Kimber & Tiffany love wearing Hot Bows!
Hot Bows entered the K9 fashion world in 2004 when Dara Samson, owner of Wags to Whiskers Pet Grooming, wanted to offer affordable and interesting bows to her customers. “At that time the only bows available were cheap and would fall apart, or they were really expensive show bows that cost over $20 per bow,” says Dara of her limited options.

Wags to Whiskers Pet Grooming

Before launching her successful grooming business in 1999, Dara had worked in the Fashion Industry, so designing such beautiful hair bows was a no brainer for her. Located in Southern California, Dara had access to many garment district shops Hot Bowsand knew exactly where to find amazing pieces for her bows. She began by creating unique pieces for boys, following with fun seasonal bows, and cute ‘girly’ bows.

She invented her own non toxic fabric stiffener to keep the bows ridged so they maintain their shape and color. Made with high quality materials, Hot Bows can be worn on top-knots, ears, and collars. “Everything has some comedy and fun in it,” says Dara of her fun inspired bows that are made in Long Beach California.

With 60 to 80 bow styles to choose from, ranging from $4.50 to $8 per bow, these durable and affordable bows come with the option of a French clip, or two latex bands on the back. Groomers prefer the latex bands, but our favorite is the simple to use French clip. To set the French clip you must first tie your dog’s ponytail or top-knot with a goody rubber band, snap the French clip Hot Bow over it and your dog is styling!

Hot Bows Owner Dara Samson and her Toy Poodle Cupcake. One of the most important members of the business is the Hot Bows spokes model, a two year old Toy Poodle named Cupcake. Cupcake travels with Dara to all of the trade shows and events, showing off the hottest bows of the season.

At first glance this adorable poodle looks like nothing more than a stuffed toy, sitting on a pillow perch, next to an assortment of bows. Suddenly the toy jumps down to greet visitors with a dainty gait and wagging tail, surprising everyone around. Bank SecurityCupcake doesn’t hesitate to demonstrate how each bow will look with a classic poodle pouf, because she loves to be the center of attention, and sporting designer bows is the perfect way to do so. She also enjoys entertaining people with her tricks such as high five, play dead, and sit up like a chipmunk.

Away from work Dara and Cupcake enjoy visiting schools where kids can sit and pet Cupcake. “She gets along so well with them,” says Dara of her kid loving dog. Cupcake also loves other animals and is quick to make friends with cats and bunny rabbits, her favorite bunny being a black angora mix named Boo. Boo came into Wags to Whiskers to have her nails cut when Cupcake fell in love with her, “Now Cupcake gets excited when she sees Boo, and she kisses Boo’s ears,” says Dara of her funny poodle.

At home Cupcake enjoys hanging out with Dara’s three other dogs, Bailey a Carin Terrier, Teddy a Chihuahua, and Gidget a senile old Pug. Cupcake and Boo Bunny are best friendsCupcake’s favorite activities include wrestling with Gidget, sunbathing, showing off, and looking at herself in the mirror. She loves to be hand fed, rather than eating out of a bowl, and she sleeps on Dara’s bed. She is the epitome of a spoiled dog but her intelligence, adorable nature, and skill for stylin’ Hot Bows make up for it!

K9 Duds for Rockin’ Dogs

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Do you feel like your dog’s inner rock star is trapped inside a world of foo-foo fashion, laced in pink ruffles, and cutesy, sickly-sweet dog clothes? Well look no further because K9 Duds has arrived on the scene!
Dogchatter Yorkies T&K wearing K9 Duds!K9 Duds sports a european rock star feel, with a funky and fresh style. Started in 2004, this family business is run by mother Rosie Klepper, her two talented children Nicole and Jeff, and their adorable Yorkshire Terrier Charlie who acts as the K9 Duds Vice President. Together they have created a line that boasts edgy underground London street fashion, while remaining stylish enough for all women to enjoy, and cool enough for any man to proudly walk his dog in.

Based in Calabasas, California, K9 Duds is a stones throw away from the influential Los Angeles fashion market. “We look at what people are wearing, dog clothing is going in that direction, and people are looking for a higher quality product,” says Nicole who loves creating fun, rock and roll inspired, verbiage tanks and hoodies. Each season they come up with new K9 Duds top selling tank.lines, experimenting with different dyes, embellishments, artwork, and slogans. With fun tank tops and hoodies that say things such as ‘Rock Star’, ‘Little Punk’, ‘Bad Attitude’, and ‘Little Devil’, their hottest selling tank says ‘Talk shit get bit’.

Proudly made in the USA, K9 Duds clothing gets softer with each wash, are made with a unisex style for any trendy dog, and features a shorter ‘boy’ cut keeping clothes dry on leg lifting boys.

Growing in popularity, K9 Duds is a huge hit in London, Sweden, Norway, and Japan. The funky dog clothes have appeared on several national and international talk shows, and can be seen on the dogs of various celebrities such as Britney Spears, Rihanna, Vanessa Hudgens, and Miley Cyrus. For those who truly love K9 Duds there is even a coordinating clothing line for people called Rock & Love.

Vanessa Hudgens selecting her favorite K9 Duds tank. The best part about K9 Duds is the family behind it. Rosie, a whiz at inventory, enjoys assisting stores with their orders. She takes special care to match each boutique with the best selling inventory for their specific city. “She’s like a human database,” says Nicole of her adorable mother, “she is the heart and soul of the business.

Nicole has a quirky sense of humor that makes her a joy to speak with, humor that is a bonus when creating funny shirt slogans. She laughs about her ‘nerdy side’ that gives her a flare for the technology end of the business, where she advertises and tweets her way into the hearts of dog lovers everywhere. Jeff, the money man, can be found behind the scenes crunching the numbers. Ironic, since he’s an English major getting his PhD, but he is no stranger to the marketing end of K9 Duds and is known for his fantastic press releases.

Then there is Charlie, the hardest working member of the family. Charlie must continually portray the cool, punk rock, bad to the bone K9 persona that the line is known for. Okay, maybe his job isn’t so difficult, especially since Charlie has been called out on his attitude “He’s moody and looks at you with stink eye,” laughs Nicole when describing her punk dog, “you have to earn it with Charlie!”

Nicole and Charlie hanging out.
Although Charlie is the spokesmodel for K9 Duds, he is not one of the models on the site. “The dogs on the site are his skinny body doubles” says Nicole of the five year old, 19.6 lbs. yorkie, who would rather spend his time schmoozing with celebrities like Norm MacDonald. Charlie loves to be pampered, groomed, and eat. His favorite hang out spot is in a Pet Flys Charlie squeezed into his favorite Pet Flys Carriercarrier, and he particularly loves the carrier he had as a puppy. Even though the carrier is many sizes too small Charlie will still jam himself inside the tiny carrier “When he sees it he chases after it until you put it down,” says Nicole of her funny dog.

Charlie also likes to boss around Rusty, a 12 year old golden retriever. If Rusty wants to go into a room Charlie runs ahead and waits in the room, jumping at Rusty when he enters. Rusty is a pleaser who likes to sleep and bark at the birds. “He is just a good dog who allows Charlie to do anything,” says Nicole “Charlie’s the king, a typical male, he marks his territory everywhere.”

K9 Duds loves to give people the opportunity to ‘Rock Out’ their dogs, while giving back at the same time. Each year K9 Duds donates to rescue organizations, and every month they donate charity baskets for organizations, such as the SPCA Los Angeles, to auction off at fundraisers.

Chi WOW WOW to the rescue!

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

Left to Right Django, Izzy and ElvisIt’s a bird, it’s a plane, no – it’s Super Chi WOW WOW flying off shelves in pet boutiques across the globe. If you haven’t heard of the Chi WOW WOW brand then it’s time to catch up with the hottest trend in Doggie Fashion.

The original designer of Vintage Streetwear for the Metrosexual Canine, Chi WOW WOW manufactures chic hoodies, tees, jackets, and sling over carriers made of vintage and recycled t-shirts. Not to mention cool accessories such as doggie backpacks and street bling jewelry. There is even a line of clothing made for hip girl dogs called IZZY GALORE, and an exclusive line of doggie duds featuring the fantastic Marvel Comic characters.Elvis's First Captain America Tee

Chi WOW WOW inspiration and chairdog, Elvis Paxton, was the first to adorn the awesome that is Chi WOW WOW, when his owner Carolyn Paxton made him a tee from a vintage Captain America T-shirt she cherished as a child. Elvis received so much attention from the funky tee that Carolyn decided to start her own line of vintage inspired dog clothing. Assisted by his Sales and Marketing team, Izzy Galore and Django, these three Chihuahuas have made a name for themselves in the Chi world.

Elvis was eight years old when adopted by Carolyn. “It was love at first sight,” says Carolyn of the adorable white faced Chi who was sick and needed special attention. “I took Elvis everywhere with me, he was so calm and lovable, it was just me and him.” Although Elvis’s origins are unknown, Carolyn imagines he came from the barrio and knows his way around the streets. During walks he is very alpha and can work a room of people or dogs winning everyone over. He enjoys ice cream, is crazy for tortillas, and loves to drink algae water from a planter. “He looks at me like ‘You should try it, it’s great!’” says Carolyn who has yet to sample the tasty runoff.

Django, Elvis, Izzy and Carolyn

Sadly, in June a brain tumor caused Elvis to go blind and suffer from seizures. Now walks are via stroller, where Elvis leans way out over the edge and rolls out if he hears a dog. “I have to strap him in because he does head flips out and lands on his feet,” says Carolyn “he doesn’t see anything wrong with it!” Elvis’s daredevil moves have made Carolyn an expert at doing wheelies to make him sit back. “He wants everyone to know he is the king, even though he is blind.”

The Original Izzy Galore Bellbottom BodysuitThe second addition to the Chi WOW WOW family was Izzy. Rescued as a young Chi, Carolyn had hoped Izzy would be the perfect model for a Chi WOW WOW girl’s line she named IZZY GALORE. However, Izzy was a total tomboy, “She doesn’t belong in dresses, she looks silly!” says Carolyn who first designed a mod bellbottomed bodysuit for Izzy that sold like crazy in Japan. Today Izzy only sports hoodies or tanks if it’s cold, and she absolutely hates it. “She would much rather that I owned and operated a chicken farm,” says Carolyn of her fashion resistant Chi. Izzy loves all toys and will play with them like mad, her favorite being a giant stuffed octopus. She is very gracious with company and will slip into the guest room for early morning greetings and snuggles before breakfast.

Django, a one year old Chi, is the most recent addition to the household, and also a shelter rescue. The perfect little fit model, Django is still getting used to wearing clothing, unlike Elvis who loves it. In love with the concept of eating but not the action, Django is like a skeleton and will only eat dog cookies. Django approving the Recycled T-Shirts“I’m trying to put weight on him, but he fools around with the food, then Izzy moves in and eats all his food,” says Carolyn of her skinny Chi, “Django is getting skinnier while Izzy is getting fatter!”

All three Chi’s sleep with Carolyn in a king sized bed. Sometimes Carolyn finds herself in the most cramped and awkward position, with Elvis under her armpit and Izzy and Django under the covers. Carolyn doesn’t mind a bit and dotes on her beloved Chi’s in a manner that is captivating. The love for her Chihuahuas shines through her clothing line which she enjoys designing with such attention to detail.

Chi WOW WOW is in almost every major city in the world with the biggest markets in Japan and the USA. It has a huge following in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Dubai, and Russia. The Vintage line is the most popular with the reversible Hoodies, made from recycled t-shirts, and the Sling Over Carriers, made from recycled jeans, being the best selling items. Each item is one of a kind and die hard fans purchase handfuls of hoodies and multiple carriers at a time.

Young ElvisWith all of the success Chi WOW WOW has received since its launch in 2004, giving back has been a major factor for Carolyn, who started the Elvis Fund. “The Elvis fund has so much meaning because I don’t know how much longer Elvis is going to be around,” says Carolyn who gives a large portion of her profits to the Elvis Fund managed by the Pasadena Community Foundation. Every year Carolyn awards grants to organizations that educate the public on animal responsibility: “We have a lot of problems with homeless animals, it gets back to educating the public on spaying neutering and adopting versus purchasing.”
